Thanks
to a CAM (Choreographers Arts Management) Fellowship
- a program funded by the US State Department
through UCLA's Center for Intercultural Performance, Artistic
Director Monica Favand visited Phnom Penh, Cambodia for
two weeks in January, 2007. Monica had the incredible
opportunity to work with dancers and dance teachers at
the Royal University of Fine Arts, offering workshops
in arts management, contemporary dance and choreography.
Monica worked with an absolutely inspiring
group of 18 dance students and teachers from the Royal
University of Fine Arts. She offered classes about developing
budgets, learning to write proposals, learning about marketing
and self-production techniques, design and many other
aspects of arts management. Monica also taught contemporary
dance classes and offered workshops in approaches to choreography.
The 18 CAM participants were so inspired
to put the things they learned into action that they created
and produced an hour long concert in an unimaginably short
amount of time - only 5 days. This was the first time
they had ever performed their own works at RUFA, that
they had ever produced a show and that they had ever worked
cooperatively to make an event happen. They created flyers,
programs and a guest book, which the audience members
couldn't wait to sign. They performed their concert, "New
Chance" to an audience of nearly 600 students, teachers
and public audience (including the Phnom Penh's Cultural
Ambassador) on January 26th at the brand new RUFA Theatre.
Monica was profoundly
inspired by her experience working with these courageous
and extremely talented artists and is grateful to have
had the opportunity to work with them.
